This side-by-side renovation involved a complete reconfiguration of the main floor and primary bedroom, including the ensuite. The layout of this smaller floor plate created a highly restricted main floor, with a L-shaped kitchen splitting the centre of the home. An inadequate front entry and back mudroom resulted in poorly configured space at the prime entry points of the home - both were reimagined with functional storage brought to the forefront.

 

The kitchen is repositioned at the back of the home to capture west facing light and connect to the backyard. A shallow built in pantry provides efficient storage in support of the kitchen. An existing fireplace was converted into a breakfast nook that complements the kitchen space. Adjacent to the kitchen, an open dining room functions as both a formal and informal gathering space, complete with built in storage serving as a sideboard for dining room needs. At the front of the house, the living room integrates a corner fireplace, creating a nook like quality that anchors the space.

 

The millwork becomes a defining feature of the home, extending beyond the typical wall plane to create floating elements in the kitchen while achieving a refined, cohesive level of finishing throughout. The materials are timeless in character. Oak floors are restored to a natural finish, and the island is clad in oak - grounding the kitchen visually while offering a highly durable surface around the heavily used island perimeter. Antique fixtures are repurposed throughout the home, bringing a personal connection to the family's prairie roots.
