RIDEAU HOUSE
The renovation to this 2004 river lot home carefully considers the original conceptual design of this single-family residence. The house is thoughtfully planned to take advantage of the river landscape, orchestrated through a series of processional steps that guide occupants into the active areas of the home. The front entry is set below the main floor, allowing one to rise upon entering. Before reaching the open layout beyond, a tall, light-filled wraparound stair connects the upper and lower floors. Past the stair, a millwork display acts as an aperture, extending through the home along the central axis to the fireplace.
The new design sustains the idea of a lens throughout, retaining existing feature millwork while reconfiguring the kitchen as a reflection of the original concept. The kitchen millwork opens to existing windows, drawing eastern light into the space during the early morning hours. Millwork is kept free of hardware to emphasize the intentional balance of solid and void.
The materials reflect a warm wood tone that complements the existing timber beams. Stone and tile echo the colour and striation of local Rundle stone, referencing both the living room fireplace and the exterior of the home. All materials have a matte finish to express the honest character of stone, concrete and porcelain tile.
