TRIANGLE HOUSE
This residential project is situated in the heart of Calgary's oldest inner-city neighbourhood, Inglewood. The site lies along the south bank of the Bow River, separated by a park and provincial pedestrian pathway. Distinct by its triangular shape, the site marks a prominent entry point onto New Street.
The objective of the project was to create a family home with an at-grade, aging-in-place suite designed for generational living, offering a strong connection to the street and adjacent park. The development, referred to as Triangle House, is uniquely defined by the triangular lot and its exposure from all three sides of the parcel. The massing of the home references the traditional gable-style roof structures along New Street through both proportion and material, paying homage to the historical influences of the neighbourhood. Building articulation has been achieved through contemporary design methods; the traditional gable structures are eroded or expanded to define the entry, main living areas, and suite. These two architectural strategies bring traditional and contemporary design into dialogue, referencing both past and present.
The mass of the home is formed by the perpendicular placement of two gable roof structures joined by a two-storey glass volume, allowing transparency and visual connection from street to park. Their placement on the site provides relief from building mass along New Street, creating an open south courtyard and active green space. The three corners of the site are programmed for highly active residential use: the at-grade suite living area (SW), the main house living room and green space (NE), and the side entry, mudroom and patio area (NW). The suite is defined by reduced building height and increased glazing facing the most prominent intersection on the site, with massing stepped at the southwest tip to provide human scale at this prominent corner.
